I have always loved color. What was more exciting than opening a new box of Crayola crayons on the first day of school, or watching paint fly off the “spin art” wheel?
But I suppressed those interests for years. Instead, I received a Ph.D. in sociology, raised two daughters, and worked as a writer, author, speaker, organizational leader, event planner and wedding officiant.
Thankfully, in recent years, I have been able to revive my childhood passions. Today I am both a fabric artist and abstract acrylic painter.
As a fiber artist I use various techniques to create my own fabrics using fiber-reactive dyes. I then use these fabrics to create color-saturated art quilts. As a painter, I use palette knives, brushes, brayers, sponges, and more to apply multiple layers of paint to paper, stretched canvas, or wood panels. I may also other materials to build layers and add nuance in line, shape, color and texture.
My work is colorful, layered, and often improvisational. Sometimes the design elements, alone, are what propel the piece. Other times I draw inspiration from the natural and physical world and from urban and imaginary landscapes.
This is my 6th year on the Art Trail. I am a member The State of the Art Gallery, The Quilt Divas, The Finger Lakes Fiber Artists, and Studio Art Quilt Associates (SAQA) and my work has been displayed in local and regional venues and shows. Regardless of medium, my goal is to generate the same childhood excitement that came from opening a new box of crayons.
