As an artist & jewelry designer, my vision is shaped by my experiences as a landscape architect, innkeeper/historic structure steward, gemologist, & long-time resident/observer of the Cayuga Lake shoreline.
I draw inspiration from natural beauty & a deep awareness of history – of the natural world & our human presence. My designs celebrate contrasts, as I work to enhance the innate beauty of gems & found objects with metalsmithing & modern design.
In many of my designs, one-of-a-kind gems are the centerpiece. Gems are ancient objects, formed by millions of years of geologic pressure. Their unique features inspire settings that are clean & architectural, crafted of oxidized & polished silver or gold. The contrast of materials (textured & smooth) and design (organic & architectural) bring out the beauty of the original gem & echo the inherent juxtaposition of natural & human-made beauty, with ancient & modern artistry.
I also design pieces with found organic objects. Like gems, they are one-of-a-kind objects that record the long span of natural history in weather-polished forms. A shell, vine, or driftwood is also a distinct record of place, a tangible fragment of forest, vineyard, beach or gorge.
In my Cayuga Collection, I mold & cast these objects to create wearable contemporary designs in solid sterling silver, often combining them with gems. Each piece is a unique contemporary casting of an ancient object, a reflection of time & place, in a contemporary setting. I design with a profound awareness of natural beauty & contrasts, designed for everyday wear, everyday love.
