Reality presents more data than we can perceive. Vision samples as much as it can and the brain fills in missing pieces from personal and cultural conditioning. This inclination to “fill in” missing pieces informs my process.
My artwork emerges as I engage with my environment through photography and the process I call ‘captured daydreaming’ where I digitally re-interpret compositional elements according to the relationship I develop with the image as it changes. I let visual elements which might typically be overlooked speak to me. A conversation unfolds and a curtain is lifted to reveal something unexpected, yet somehow familiar.
I left my successful business career to backpack and photograph around the world, particularly inspired by how the aboriginal traditions of Dreamtime stories honor spaces of reflection, re-telling and re-shaping—a timeless space where the past, present and future happen all at once.
Years ago in my cellar darkroom, I’d get happily lost in the process of playing with light duration and fluid concentration as an image slowly appeared on the paper in the tray of chemicals. Today, working with my specialized digital painting software that same ‘darkroom excitement’ allows me to share anew my awe of the many faces of Nature. I am fortunate to see.
I look forward to welcoming visitors to the garden level studio space I share with my life partner and artist, Karen Viola, also listed on the Art Trail, where prints of my works on paper and canvas are displayed.
