As an Ithaca native I have a strong affiliation with the region’s natural beauty. Step-parenting, single parenting, degrees in Graphic Design and Landscape Architecture, dancing, gardening and community involvement have enriched me as well. I’ve continued, if intermittently, to sew since childhood, and to do printmaking and clay-work since my twenties. I have been fortunate to have been able to take coursework in various disciplines, including the design fields, ceramics, stained glass, silversmithing, and photography. All of these have informed my sensibilities around art and craft as expressions of both function and beauty.
I find much enjoyment in observation, including in the details of things. This has enhanced my focus within my disciplines. These currently are illustration, block-carving, printmaking, sewing and beadmaking.
The renderings of flora and fauna used in my print designs are often interlaced with Celtic knot-work within and around the illustration. The resulting drawings have multiple layers of intricacy that reference movement, anatomy and symbolism. From these I carve all my own blocks and stamps! With my love for the tactile qualities of cloth, I have extended my printmaking to include textiles, which are then sewn into various accessories.
My beadmaking starts with a drawing to work out the details. The details include identification of the component shapes used in 3-dimensional construction; good color stories that improve legibility; and the final bead shape. The designs include original graphics and original interpretations of flora or fauna. The millefiori technique is similar to making jelly-rolls but with more complexity!
