Jim discovered his passion for wood while still a teen. An artist friend encouraged him to explore his love of carving and he did just that, attending the Wendell Castle School of Fine Woodworking in Scottsville NY.
Elizabeth made her first piece of furniture, a Shaker table, while taking a model-making course. Hooked on wood, she continued to explore woodworking, enrolling in a couple of courses at RIT before landing at the Genoa School for Furniture Making and Design in Genoa NY.
Elizabeth and Jim have exhibited their work independently and in collaboration, both locally (including the Johnson Museum, TCPL, CAP, CSMA, and the State of the Art Gallery) as well as nationally (including the Anchorage Museum of History and Art, the Memorial Art Gallery in Rochester NY, and the International Contemporary Furniture Fair in NYC).
Jim works full time in the shop, and Elizabeth balances her community development work at CCE-Tompkins with her shop time, where she looks forward to the Art Trail each year. “We love participating in the Ithaca Art Trail – it gives us a chance to play; to explore ideas, techniques and materials. It reminds us why doing this work is so much fun!”
