I enjoy using animals in my relief prints to explore the pathos, humor and humanity of life. My recent work has a non-linear narrative quality with little creatures enacting their humble dramas. Often a badger is involved. My prints are created with wood or linoleum blocks which are carved, inked and printed entirely by hand. The process is time consuming yet peacefully meditative and sometimes even mystical in my studio by the woods.

STUDIO DIRECTIONS

My home studio is at 1989 Ellis Hollow Road between NY 79 and Ellis Hollow Creek Road. The house is a greenish ranch with grey trim directly across from a little side street called Ogden. We have two driveways. You can park in either driveway and follow the signs to studio entrance.

ARTIST’S STATEMENT

My childhood was spent near Buffalo, NY. As a result, I felt a certain kinship with the animal called buffalo, and thought of myself as privileged to have those bloodlines. Also, I can’t go for very long without the presence of snow. My nick name back then was “sparrowlegs”, even though I didn’t resemble a sparrow that much.

In the course of my life I’ve lived in many different places. I recently realized I have a low threshold for boredom, compensated for by having a high threshold for chaos. About ten years ago I moved to Ithaca after doing an internet search from a damp corner of a bog in Ireland. At this moment, I live a double life of sorts, spending most of my time here in Ithaca and the rest of my time in the Republic of Ireland, where I have been granted Artist’s Residency status.
